What does vision in business really mean?

Category: Client

Across a series of recent LinkedIn polls, one theme has consistently come out on top, vision. We asked, ‘what quality best defines a great leader in business?’ and ‘what do you feel is most important for businesses today?’. For both, the answer was vision, which got us thinking more about what vision in business actually means.

We asked, ‘what does vision in business mean to you?’ and the resounding winner with 70% of the poll was ‘clear long-term goals’.

Vision is often used by businesses to describe their strategy and plans for the future; however many don’t know how to put it into practice when it comes to recruiting both temporary and permanent workers.

What does vision look like in practice?
When vision becomes actionable, it empowers hiring managers to recruit with purpose, not just fill roles. It should be embedded in the values that leaders within the business promote, how the company talks about success, and how they build their teams.

Here are our top tips for employers and hiring managers to help put vision into practice during the hiring process:

Start with strategic clarity
When candidates see ‘why’ behind a role, they connect to it faster, and by offering clarity in the job advertisement and during hiring, you can attract the very best candidates.

The job description shouldn’t just list tasks, they should answer some vital questions; what business objectives does this role support, where could this role evolve in 6, 12, or 24 months, and how will the role contribute to both short and long-term goals for the business.

This can be relevant for both temporary and permanent workers, depending on the progress of the business.

Hire people who want to grow with you
Workers who are excited about your business direction bring energy, adaptability and commitment to the team, and can be a great asset. A passionate person, whether as a temporary or permanent employee, will put that passion into their work. Asking candidates during interviews what their long-term goals are, are a good opportunity to learn more about their goals.

Be transparent about your journey
Share your goals with candidates, whether it’s expansion, innovation, or transformation of company culture and brand. This kind of openness will attract aligned candidates, build trust early in the process, and set the tone for a retention-focused culture across temporary contracts and long-term hires.

Why clear long-term goals matter in recruitment today
In today’s climate of skills shortages, AI disruption, and shifting candidate and employer expectations, recruitment can’t afford to be short-sighted. Clear long-term goals help teams to stay strategic, guiding not just permanent hiring decisions, but also how and why temporary talent is brought in. But why do clear long-term goals matter?

Future-proofing
Planning for the future when it comes to hiring is vital for any company strategy. Anticipating how skills and roles will evolve, how needs of the business will change, and seasonal changes requiring additional workers.

Retention
Long-term vision boosts retention by giving all employees; short or long-term, a clearer sense of purpose. Permanent staff invest in growth when they see the bigger picture, and temporary workers are more likely to return, convert, or go the extra mile when they understand their role in wider plans.

Trust
Candidates for both permanent and temporary roles want clarity on direction, stability, and workplace culture, knowing how their contribution supports the business, helps them engage more fully from day one.

Strategic hiring
Recruitment with long-term goals moves hiring from reactive to strategic. It means permanent hires are made with growth and succession in mind, while temporary placements become targeted investments to support evolving business needs.

Ultimately, vision is the backbone of strategic hiring, and with 70% of respondents defining business vision as clear long-term goals, the message is clear that employers need to recruit with strategy, not just urgency.
